Free Tax Preparation: Find VITA, TCE, or IRS Free File

Find legitimate free tax preparation, check whether a local VITA or TCE site handles your return, and prepare the documents needed for an appointment.

VITA and TCE can provide free basic tax-return preparation through trained volunteers, while IRS Free File helps eligible people prepare their own returns with software or fillable forms. Choose based on the help you need and the complexity of your return, not simply an advertisement containing the word “free.”

For in-person or volunteer-assisted help, use the IRS locator and confirm that the site is open, accepts appointments, and handles your situation. A community-center address in a directory is not a guarantee that tax volunteers are present every day or throughout the year.

Choose between preparation help and self-preparation

The IRS describes Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, as basic return preparation for qualifying taxpayers. It commonly serves people with lower incomes, people with disabilities, and taxpayers who need language assistance. Local sites may establish their own income limits and service scope.

Tax Counseling for the Elderly, or TCE, particularly serves people age 60 or older and specializes in pension and retirement-related questions. The IRS manages these programs, but partner organizations operate the sites. A volunteer site is not necessarily an IRS office offering every IRS service.

IRS Free File is a different route. Guided software leads you through your own return; Free File Fillable Forms is intended for people comfortable using tax forms and instructions. Neither should be mistaken for a scheduled meeting with a tax preparer.

Use the official locator and confirm the scope

The IRS preparation page links to the VITA/TCE Locator Tool and the AARP Tax-Aide locator. Find a convenient site and read its listing for service dates, appointment instructions, languages, and any document or income restrictions.

Call before travelling. Tell the site which tax year you need, whether you also need a state return, and whether the return includes self-employment, rental income, investments, education credits, or other features beyond a straightforward wage return.

The IRS notes that services vary with the expertise of the volunteers at each location. A complex issue may be outside a particular site's scope even if your income qualifies. Ask about a referral rather than assuming the volunteer can resolve it on the day of the appointment.

Also distinguish filing a new return from amending an old one, answering a notice, or resolving a collection issue. Ask whether the site handles the exact task. Preparing a return does not automatically resolve an unpaid balance from another year.

Do not treat a single income number as a universal rule

The current IRS VITA guidance says the IRS does not set one program-wide income limit and that individual sites may set their own. It describes the program's general focus on taxpayers within EITC income guidelines and other groups needing assistance.

For IRS Free File Guided Tax in the 2026 filing season for 2025 returns, the IRS lists adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less. Individual partners can have additional conditions such as age or state residency. Free state filing is not included in every offer.

Adjusted gross income, or AGI, is a tax-return figure after specified adjustments, not simply gross wages or take-home pay. Use the correct year's information when checking a software offer.

Begin from the IRS Free File page to reach the participating offer. Going directly to a company's ordinary commercial website can lead to a different product or fee structure. Read the offer before entering payment information.

Prepare the records for your appointment

Use the IRS document checklist and the site's own instructions. It identifies identification, tax-number records, income forms, and other information a preparer may need.

  • Identity: Accepted photo identification, requested Social Security or ITIN documentation, and birth dates for people on the return.
  • Income: All relevant wage, interest, retirement, Social Security, unemployment, and other tax forms, plus necessary business records.
  • Credits and coverage: Child care information, education records, and Form 1095-A if you had Marketplace coverage.
  • Prior return and payments: Last year's return if available, estimated-tax payments, and relevant IRS notices or identity-protection information.
  • Refund account: Accurate routing and account information if choosing direct deposit.

For a joint return, ask what attendance and signature arrangements the site requires for both spouses. Tell staff beforehand if disability, language, or transportation needs affect the appointment.

If a form is missing, contact the issuer or ask the site which replacement record is acceptable. Do not guess at withholding or omit an income source because it is inconvenient to obtain the document.

Review the return before authorizing filing

Check names, tax numbers, filing status, dependents, income, and bank details. Ask the preparer to explain a credit or expense you do not recognize. You are responsible for the accuracy of the return even when someone helps prepare it.

The IRS requires a quality review for returns prepared at VITA/TCE sites. That review does not eliminate the need for complete information from you. Tell the preparer about all relevant documents, including corrected forms.

Keep the finished return and confirmation of electronic acceptance. An appointment, a signed authorization, and IRS acceptance are different stages. Ask how you will be notified if the return is rejected and needs correction.

If the return shows money owed

Free preparation does not mean the tax itself is waived. Ask about the payment deadline and review the IRS payment-plan and hardship routes if you cannot pay in full. Do not assume that delaying the return avoids the balance or penalties.

Use official refund-status tools after an accepted return rather than paying a stranger to “release” a refund. GovMoneyMap does not prepare returns, book appointments, collect tax records, or guarantee a refund.
